Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description
A blue shield shaped insignia with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) white border, 3 inches (7.62 cm) in height and 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in width overall bearing a yellow flight symbol point up emitting a white contrail throughout superimposed by a red pheon also point up.

Symbolism
Gold/yellow denotes excellence, achievement and high ideals.  Red, white and blue, our national colors, convey courage, sincerity and loyalty.  The flight symbol represents space, the units theater of operations; the pheon symbolizes a strong defense and military preparedness.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 22 August 1988.  (TIOH Dwg. No. A-1-755)




Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height consisting of a dark blue disc with a light blue demi-globe in base gridlined gold enveloped by two crossed gold ellipsoid lightning flashes with a gold four pointed star at the apex of the right flash and issuing vertically at the conjunction of the flashes a red pheon on a red staff.  Overall in base a gold flight symbol arcing a gold contrail to left and behind the globe; all above a gold scroll inscribed FIRST IN SPACE in red letters.

Symbolism
The light blue demi-globe represents the earth as seen from space.  The red pheon suggests the Armys responsibilities for ballistic missile defense and strategic defense planning.  The four pointed star alludes to the Armys use of satellites in space for navigation and positioning.  The five pointed star alludes to the Armys use of satellites for communications and surveillance.  The deltoid flight symbol in orbit symbolizes the Armys heritage in booster/launcher design and the close working relationship of the U.S. Army Space Command and NASA.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 12 December 1988.
